I contacted Tom (the son of Stafford & Son) and within a couple of days he came out to the house to discuss our project and look at the existing deck. By the end of the next day he called and said that he had a quote for us and insisted on setting a time to come back out to the house to present it and review it. While I initially thought that a bit strange, I soon realized that Tom wanted to be able to explain his quote in detail and answer any questions that we may have had about the project. Additionally, he took the opportunity to show us before and after photos of some similar projects he had done previously. It clearly would have been quicker and easier for him to send us his quote via e-mail, but it was this personal attention that convinced us to choose Stafford and Son for the job. Once we contracted the job, Tom had the plans drawn up, reviewed them with us, and took care of all the permitting involved. About the only negative that we encountered in the entire process was the amount of time that passed before the project really got started, but that was understandable given that we contracted it in the early Spring when business was ramping up. During this wait, Tom was great about updating us on his schedule and when he projected construction to start. While we were originally looking to just put a roof over the existing deck, after discussing it with Tom we made the decision to remove it and start from scratch. He explained that the perimeter of the existing deck would have to be removed to pour the footer for the columns supporting the new roof, so it made sense to us to spend a little extra to avoid having issues with having too many joints, matching lumber, etc. In retrospect, were glad we made this decision as the new deck turned out great and is much better looking than the old one. In addition to adding the roof, Toms quote also included installing a ceiling fan and flood light fixture that we provided. Once demolition of the old deck got underway things moved along well. From demolition to completion, the entire process took about three and a half weeks. I suspect that it would have been more like two and a half had it not been for a few weather delays thrown into the mix. Tom arranged for an open top dumpster for construction debris as well as a portable toilet for his crews to minimize any disruptions. Tom was quick to respond to any questions we had during construction and was on site most mornings to meet with his crews and update us on his timeline. Both of his crew leads, Aaron (deck) and Jeremy (roof structure), were always courteous, professional, and happy answer questions or explain what was going on and what was up next. Everyone else who worked on the project was equally polite and respectful. Tom made sure to inform us when to expect the city inspectors throughout the process and was able to schedule them in order to minimize down time. With the exception of the few days that we were without a deck (which made taking the dog out a challenge), the whole evolution went off with minimal inconvenience. We are extremely pleased with the end result and would not hesitate to recommend Stafford and Son to anyone looking to have construction work done. While our direct experience was only with the deck and roof, Im confident based on our interaction (as well as the other glowing reviews here) that Stafford & Son Builders would be an excellent choice for any project.
